Augmented Reality Communities is a transdisciplinary research project that explores how augmented reality (AR) and playful approaches can be used to design participatory processes in public spaces. The project launched in October 2022 and is a collaboration between the artist collective gold extra and the Society and Sustainability | Contemporary Art and Cultural Production program division of the Interuniversity Institution for Science & Art Salzburg.

To mark the conclusion of the research project, the eJournal REALIZE! will be presented on October 14. In the first part, city walks and hands-on workshops will offer insights into the research work and the playful practical projects of AR Communities: Those interested can try out the AR editor developed with Artificial Museum, the bike game “Critical City Cycling,” and the approaches of the Science Fiction Lab—where urban utopias are explored with children and young people—and thus become familiar with research methods that bridge games and participatory approaches.

In the second part of the event, the authors of the eJournal will present their artistic and research projects—which explore the intersection of public space, participation, and AR—in short lightning talks.

The concluding panel discussion will focus on experiences from artistic research involving digital games and augmented reality.

Following the event, we will celebrate the release of the eJournal REALIZE.
